Bicyclist dies after Escondido accident

Posted By Dan Flanzig || 28-Sep-2011

- A 79-year-old Escondido man died Tuesday night following a bicycle accident, police said.

Officers responded about 7:30 p.m. to Mission Avenue, east of Gamble Street, to a report of an injured bicyclist, Escondido police Lt. Tom Albergo said. The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

No vehicles were involved in the accident, and the cause is under investigation, Albergo said.

The man was not wearing a helmet, and there were no lights on the bicycle. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor, Albergo said.

Any witnesses are asked to call police Officer Tyler Songer of the traffic bureau at (760) 839-4454.

The man's name was not yet released pending notification of relatives.
